French director Jacques Audiard's Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord, who undergoes gender-affirming surgery to become a woman is a Belgian co-production: Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne's production company Les Films du Fleuve and Brussels-based choreographer Damien Jalet collaborated on the movie. The film was a top favourite among the film nominations landing 10 nominations, the highest for a comedy or musical but one ever recorded.

‘Emilia Pérez’ was awarded 4 Golden Globes: those for best non-English language film, best female supporting actress in a film (Zoe Saldaña), best film (musical or comedy) and best original song (‘El mal’ by Clement Ducol and Camille).

Zoe Saldaña thanked the Golden Globes for ‘honouring the women of “Emilia Pérez”’. Besides Saldaña, Selena Gomez (best female supporting actress in a film) and Karla Sofía Gascón (best actress in a musical or comedy) were also nominated but failed to secure a win. Earlier, the female cast won the award for best joint female performance at the Cannes Film Festival. There, the film was also awarded the jury's prize.
