The accident happened at Vorst-Zuid station, near the Audi car factory. The girl was hit by an intercity train that was on its way from Antwerp to Charleroi. As the victim is a minor and the investigation is still ongoing, the railway police cannot say much about the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Rail traffic was suspended for a while on the line between Brussels South and Nivelles (Walloon Brabant). However, as the accident happened so late in the evening, inconvenience to passengers was limited. Around 40 passengers that were on the train that was involved in the accident were transferred to a replacement bus with which they were able to complete their journeys.

The NMBS spokesman Dimitri Temmerman told journalists that the track reopened again at 6:30am. This meant that Friday morning’s rush hour went pretty much as normal.
