Snow in Liège, Luxembourg and Namur provinces, Royal Meteorological Institute warns of slippery roads

The first snow of 2025 has fallen in the south of Belgium. A Code Yellow warning for slippery road conditions has been issued for 3 of the 5 Walloon Provinces. With snow already having fallen on high ground in Liège, Luxembourg and Namur provinces there is a possibility of wintery showers elsewhere in the country later today (Thursday 2 January). However, any snow that does fall on lower ground is unlikely to stick.

The southeast of the country woke up to a covering of snow that is up to 8 cm deep in some places.

However, the winter wonderland won’t last for long and the front that has brought the snow will have left the country by the early afternoon.

During the afternoon cloud will come in from the North Sea and there will be showers some of which could be wintery. On high ground in the Ardennes low cloud will sometimes reduce visibility.

Maximum temperatures will reach between 0°C in the Ardennes to 7°C at the coast. Winds in coastal areas will be moderately strong.

A wintery weekend

The wintery weather will continue during the next few days.

During Thursday night patches of ice could make conditions treacherous in central and eastern areas of the country.

On Friday temperatures will remain under freezing in the morning and there could be some local ice patches. It will be a grey start in the Ardennes with freezing fog and the chance of some light snowfall. During the course of the day there will be cloud interspersed with brighter spells and some wintery showers. The brighter spells will last longest near to the coast and close to the French boarder.

On Saturday temperatures will remain below freezing during the morning in most areas. However, during the course of the day cloud will increase. It will remain mainly dry.

On Saturday night they could be some sleet or snow or possibley freezing rain. This will change to rain as the night goes on. Temperatures will fall to -2°C in the Ardennes and 2°C or 3°C at the coast.

On Sunday there will be a lot of rain. In the morning the showers could still be wintery in the north and northeast of the country. Temperatures will rise, reaching 6°C on the High Fens and 12°C to 13°C in the west. Winds will be moderate to moderately strong at times. Gusts of between 60 km/h and 70 km/h are possible.
