Figures released shortly before noon on Wednesday show that between 6pm on New Year’s Eve and 6am on New Year’s Day 159 people were detained by police in the Brussels-Capital Region.
During the course of Tuesday evening and the early hours of Wednesday morning police and emergency services personnel repeatedly came under attack from fireworks while they were out doing their job. 4 of them were slightly injured. A security guard was also slightly injured by a firework. However, he carried on working despite his injury.
Busses and trams too were targeted. The Brussels public transport company MIVB reports that one of its passengers was injured and was taken to hospital. However, their condition is not life-threatening. Several police vehicles were also damaged. The Fire Service reports that large quantities of fireworks were confiscated at various locations, including in the City of Brussels and in Schaarbeek.
