Are fireworks allowed in your neighbourhood?

Firing off fireworks on New Year's Eve is a Flemish tradition but can be a source of danger and a nuisance for people and animals. Several Flemish municipalities apply a general fireworks ban or impose conditions. Find out here whether your municipality has a ban on fireworks on New Year's Eve.

In the run-up to the New Year, the debate about whether or not members of the public can use fireworks is flaring up again. At present, there is no general ban on fireworks in Flanders, but many municipalities and police districts have decided to ban fireworks for members of the public. There members of the public are not allowed to fire off their own fireworks, but organised public displays may be permitted.

This being said, just over 40 per cent of Flemish municipalities allow the use of fireworks on New Year's Eve by members of the general public, albeit during a limited time slot or only if you have applied for permission. Check below whether you are allowed to fire off fireworks on New Year's Eve in your municipality.

Green means it’s permitted; amber means conditions apply and red signals a ban for members of the public.
