There was another attack on the Colruyt supermarket in Antwerp’s Zuid district last night. The explosion caused less disruption than the previous attack because the store was closed. Fire bombs were deployed to damage the main entrance doors. During the previous attack in late November, a member of the public threw three fire bombs into the supermarket when customers were present.
Emergency services received a call just before 3.30am on Christmas Eve warning of an attack on the Colruyt supermarket on Gentplaats near the Zuid Park. ‘The branch is the same one where 3 fire bombs were thrown in an attack at the end of November,’ said Wouter Bruyns of Antwerp police.
‘Local residents heard several loud bangs triggering a serious fire. The supermarket’s sliding glass doors were damaged in the attack,’ The army bomb squad and forensic technicians attended the scene as part of the investigation.
At the time of the attack, the store was closed. In late November, a masked man threw 3 fire bombs into the supermarket just before closing time. These landed near the check-out. As if by miracle, no one was injured. Police are still hoping to track down the culprit.
