Any snow seems set to melt quickly!

What are the chances of a White Christmas?

Belgian police have issued a warning for traffic disruption today in the provinces of Luxembourg and Liège, and in the south of Namur province, as a result of the prospect of sleet and snow showers. At the highest points of the Ardennes, 5 to 10 cm of snowfall may be recorded. The snow will disappear by the end of the afternoon.

On the E411 and E25 motorways and the A26 road trucks got into trouble due to the snow. Police advise motorists to keep their distance, not brake suddenly and limit speeds.

The Met Office declared a code yellow warning for slippery roads, but that warning has meanwhile been withdrawn.

Weather over the next few days

Expect a mixed bag of cloudier periods and showers today as showers move inland from the coast. In the far west, it remains dry. The chance of a shower in the northeast seems limited.

In the Ardennes, expect sleet and snow in higher spots (500 metres and higher) and highs between 1 and 5 degrees.

Tonight expect showers in central parts and sleet or snow showers out east. It will turn dry from the west with clearer weather appearing.

Lows between -5 and 0 degrees in the Ardennes, around freezing in central parts and between 3 and 4 degrees on the coast. Watch out for slippery conditions due to wet roads and freezing conditions.

Christmas Eve is heavily overcast as cloud moves in from the west, with a chance of light rain or drizzle. In the Ardennes, a few snowflakes are possible. Highs between 1 and 3 degrees in the Ardennes and between 4 and 10 degrees elsewhere.

Christmas Day lacks sunshine with lots of low cloud, and locally also fog. Some drizzle may occur. Highs between 5 and 11 degrees.

Belgium has not experienced a White Christmas since 2010

Yet again, a white Christmas is not on the cards. The last White Christmas dates from 2010, when we experienced a thick snow carpet of 16 centimetres of snow.

Officially, it’s a White Christmas, if a layer of snow at least 1 cm thick appears in Ukkel by 8am on 25 December.
