King prolongs Federal Formateur’s mission until 7 January and hopes for “a decisive breakthrough” at start of the new year.

The man leading the talks on the formation of a new federal government, the Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever, went to the Royal Palace on Friday morning to bring King Filip up to date on the progress made in the negotiations so far. More than 6 months since the election, Belgium still doesn’t have a new federal government.

Belgium’s Head of State has prolonged Mr De Wever’s mission by a further two and a half weeks. Bart De Wever will next report to the King on 7 January.

In the meantime, the talks will continue. On Friday afternoon the negotiating teams from the Flemish nationalists (N-VA), Flemish socialists (Vooruit), Flemish Christian democrats (CD&V), Francophone liberals (MR) and the Francophone centrists (Les Engagés) will meet again to discuss, amongst other things fiscal policy.

The press statement released by the Royal Palace following Friday morning’s meeting appears to indicate that King Filip wishes to turn up the pressure on the 5 parties that are involved in the negotiations. The statement expresses the wish for “a decisive breakthrough to be made in the negotiations at the start of 2025”.
