Two foreign tourists rushed to the rescue of a 5-year-old girl when she plunged into the waters of the River Leie (Lys) in Kortrijk (West Flanders) on Sunday afternoon The tourists were out for a stroll when they noticed the girl clinging to a wooden pontoon. They were able to pull the girl out of the water to safety. She had minor symptoms of hypothermia.
The girl's mother was working at the Roman Catholic Saint Michael’s Church at the time. She had noticed that her daughter was no longer in church and had called the police, but it was not the police who turned out to be the child’s saviours, but 2 foreign tourists.
The child must have fallen into the water from the quayside. The two foreign tourists didn’t hesitate when they noticed the girl and rushed to her aid. Together they were able to pull the girl out of the treacherous waters of the River Leie and to safety.
The 5-year-old was taken to hospital and after a thorough examination, she was found to have minor symptoms of hypothermia. Mother and daughter were then soon reunited.
