National 24-hour “Speed Trap Marathon” on Wednesday

Once again today (Wednesday 20 November) the federal and local police services are carrying out a combined operation against excess speed on the country’s roads. It is the 21st time that a so-called “Speed Trap Marathon” is being held. The Federal Police Service spokeswoman An Berger told VRT News that from 6am today until 6am tomorrow police services across the country will be carrying out additional checks on motorists’ speed.

By announcing that an operation against speeding is taking place, it is hoped that drivers will be dissuaded from speeding and will abide by the speed limit. Excess speed is still the main cause of road traffic accidents.

The last “Speed Trap Marathon” was in April. Then around 6% of the motorists whose speed was checked were found to be speeding. A total of 145 driving licences were confiscated.

During a “Speed Trap Marathon” held November 6.19% of the motorists checked were found to be speeding. At the time this was described as an “regrettable record”.
