The Flemish nationalists, socialists and Christian democrats and Francophone liberals and centrists of Les Engagés, the so-called Arizona parties, resumed talks on Thursday with a view to forming a new Belgian government. Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever is leading the talks.
Arizona parties resume budget talks with Belgium’s wealthiest set to contribute more
Socialist Vooruit has been invited back to the negotiating table after the party earlier rejected the formateur’s super memorandum policy document. Vooruit leader Rousseau was unhappy with the contribution Belgium’s wealthiest were scheduled to contribute, but after King Filip confirmed Mr De Wever in his role the Vooruit leader was today able to speak of an important opening.
"I read that it is possible that a greater contribution will be requested from Belgium's wealthiest, I read that the index (linking wages and benefits) is to remain, and I read that the burdens will be distributed more fairly. I now want to hear whether these openings are sincere” Vooruit leader Rousseau said.
VRT political editor Bart Verhulst speaks of ‘Make or Break’ time. Mr De Wever is reportedly exploring a new route that would involve focusing on the budget and reforms. This would put tax reforms on hold and the question is whether the Francophone liberals are willing to accept that as without tax reforms the tax burden will rise if Belgium's wealthiest are taxed more.
