Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever (N-VA) has responded to the further two weeks he has been given as formateur to explore a new federal government with his own Flemish nationalist party, Flemish socialist Vooruit, Flemish Christian democrat CD&V, Francophone liberal MR and Francophone centrist Les Engagés.

‘My intention is to get a coalition of parties around the table as soon as possible so that we can start the final phase of negotiations towards a coalition agreement.’
The N-VA leader wants to get Flemish socialist Vooruit back at the table. ‘First and foremost, a stable majority will be sought,’ he says. A coalition with Flemish liberal Open VLD that has the slenderest of majorities is out of the question for Mr De Wever for the time being.
‘Given the particularly serious state of our budget, we have no time to lose. I’ll be proposing a method of proceeding on the basis of which parties of good will should be able to agree to come to the negotiating table,’ Mr De Wever says in a press release.
