A 25-year-old international student has been killed by two youths in the centre of Brussels. Police have arrested the suspects, but the motive remains unclear
A foreign student was stabbed in the stomach in the centre of Brussels in the early morning hours of Thursday. After the police and emergency services arrived at the scene, the 25-year-old from Singapore was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he died of his injuries.
According to police, the man is a student in Belgium, but they have not released information about where he is studying. He was in Brussels with two friends in the area of the Beurs when, according to reports, the three were approached by two other young men, who asked them for a cigarette. They then asked for the student’s phone, but he refused to give it to them.
‘Suspects quickly identified’
The three hurried away, heading northeast, but eventually the Singaporean student was alone. He was apparently approached by the two men again. One of them stabbed him, and the two fled the scene.
“Two suspects were very quickly identified,” said the prosecutor’s office in a statement. “They are both 18 years old. We carried out a search of their homes and have arrested them.” The motive of the stabbing remains unclear, as neither the police nor the prosecutor are releasing any more details during the investigation.
