The Belgian Met Office (RMI) has issued a warning for dense fog. The warning is valid until 11am. If you cannot see beyond 100 metres, your rear fog lights are mandatory, explains Hajo Beeckman of VRT’s traffic unit.
‘In the northeast of the country, dense fog is rapidly forming. As a result, visibility may be limited to less than 200 metres, or locally even less than 50 metres,’ the Met Office warns.
A yellow code warning means the RMI is calling for vigilance. ‘Keep sufficient distance between your car and the one in front and adjust your speed,’ the RMI urges.
When should you turn on your fog lights and when not?
‘Rear fog lights are compulsory, and you should use them when you cannot see further than 100 metres in front of you,’ VRT traffic expert Hajo Beeckman explains. ‘It is the same with snow and with heavy rain.’
When the fog has lifted, you should switch off your fog lights, just like in traffic jams, because otherwise you simply blind other road users. ‘If you forget to turn off your rear fog lights, you are committing a violation of the traffic code and can get a hefty fine!’ warns Hajo Beeckman.
