20 drums of chemicals dumped at car park thought to contain drug lab waste

Some 20 barrels of chemicals have been found on a car park in Kortemark (West Flanders). The barrels were reportedly dumped there by persons unknown. It is not exactly clear what substances the barrels contain, but it’s thought the waste may possibly come from a drug lab. The fire service attended the scene and the car park is closed for the time being.

The 20 drums each have a capacity of 20 litres and there are two larger drums too. The labels on the drums state that they contain a specified chemical product, but whether this information is correct is unclear. ‘Some barrels were leaking,’ says Kristof Louagie, spokesman for the local fire service. ‘There is no evaporation because it is too cold, but the substances could cause irritation on contact.’ The fire brigade decided not to take any risks and closed the car park for checks. The content of the leaking drums is being collected.

The civil protection service has meanwhile collected the barrels, explains mayor Karolien Damman: ‘There is still no clarity about what is in these barrels. That will now be looked into as a priority by people from the lab. The police are also looking at images from numberplate recognition cameras to see who dumped the barrels.’
