Police received a report of a home invasion burglary at around 4:45am on Friday. Kato Belmans of the Antwerp prosecutor’s office told VRT News that "The armed criminals entered the home of a jeweller and his wife. They tied them up, gagged them and threatened them with violence.”

The couple sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment. “But they are very shaken by the incident and they are receiving psychological counselling from victim support”, Ms Belmans said.

There is still no trace of the robbers “They immediately fled the scene. The police have not yet been able to arrest anyone. We do know that more than one person is involved”.

The fact that one of the victims is a jeweller gives an indication on the motive. “The perpetrators searched the whole house and were probably looking for cash or jewelry. It is not yet clear whether anything was taken”.
