Belgium, Cyprus and a third country – an EEA or EFTA member, or a candidate or potential candidate for EU membership – will share the Capital of Culture title in 2030. The shortlisted applicants now have a year to develop their project.
The three winning bids will be announced next year. A jury will visit the candidates in the autumn before making their decision.
For the 45th edition of the competition, the jury assessed the bids based on several criteria, including their link with Europe, the cultural and artistic content of the project and the involvement of local people and civil society.
Four Belgian cities have previously held the title: Antwerp in 1993, Brussels in 2000, Bruges in 2002 and Mons in 2015.
