The current coalition made up of socialists, Christian democrats and greens will continue to govern the Flemish Brabant city of Leuven for another 6 years. The announcement that there would be no changes to the municipal coalition in Leuven was made by Mayor Mohamed Ridouani (socialist) on Wednesday morning.
No change in Leuven as socialists, Christian democrats and greens sign new coalition agreement
Mr Ridouani’s socialists gained 41.7% of the vote in the municipal elections on 13 October. The Flemish nationalist party N-VA was second, with Christian democrats and the greens finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. The greens’ vote was down by 50% on the previous local elections in 2018.
A week after the election Mr Ridouani said that there would be no coalition with N-VA. Everything pointed towards a coalition between the socialists and the Christian democrats. However, it was unclear as to whether the greens would be kept on board.
Speaking earlier on Wednesday, Mr Ridouani said that "As far as I am concerned, the Christian democrats and the greens are strong partners as they have shown in recent years. This is why we are going to govern with them again. We will take the election result into account when the municipal cabinet is formed”.
In addition to the Mayor, the socialists will have 5 Aldermen. The Christian democrats and the greens will have 2 Aldermen each.
