Magistrates in Antwerpen have decided that a 49-year-old man from Schoten, near Antwerp should remain on remand for a further 2 months. The man was arrested on suspicion of the murder of a man in his 70s from Zoersel (Antwerp Province).

In the early hours of 4 June, the pensioner’s body was found in woodland adjacent to the carpool carpark next to the E34 motorway at Oelegem. The woodland is a popular spot for gay man looking for casual sex.

Interupted sex date

Police issued an appeal for witnesses and footage shot by a vehicle dashcam led to the arrest of a 49-year-old suspect on 12 July. It has since emerged that the victim had disturbed the supect while he was engaged in sexual activity with another man. The victim then made sexual advances towards the suspect. The suspect then became furious. Initially the suspect said that he couldn’t remember stabbing the victim. However, during a reconstruction earlier this month he changed his story. He said that he stabbed the pensioner during a scuffle.

The 49-year-old also admitted that he and not the victim was carrying a knife. The man with whom he was having sexual relations just prior to the stabbing has still not been found. The suspect has been remanded in custody for a further 2 months.
