During the next 6 years the East Flemish city of Aalst will continue to be governed by a municipal coalition made up of Flemish nationalists, Christian democrats and the local liberal list Voor Aalst. The current Mayor Christoph D'Haese will remain in office for what will be his third term as Mayor.
The announcement that there will be no change at Aalst City Hall was made by Mr D’Haese on Tuesday morning. After the previous municipal elections in 2018, Mr D’Haese nationalist party N-VA also formed a coalition with the liberals and the Christian democrats.
However, by the end of the legislature there were no more Christian democrats in the municipal cabinet following the death of Ilse Uyttersprot (who was murdered by her partner) and Katrien Beulens’ departure from the party.
Although both the far-right Vlaams Belang and the socialist party Vooruit both increased their representation on the city council, becoming the 2nd and 3rd party respectively, they will remain in opposition.
