Charleroi Airport cancels all departures scheduled for Tuesday due to industrial action by security staff

Belgium’s second busiest airport has announced that it is cancelling all departing flights that were due to take off tomorrow (Tuesday 22 October). Charleroi Airport that is also sometimes referred to as Brussels South Airport has taken the decision to cancel all flights scheduled to depart on Tuesday due to industrial action by security staff. The action means that there won’t be enough security staff tomorrow to guarantee the security of passengers and those that work at the airport.

In a statement released on Monday afternoon the airport said that "A shortage of security personnel will mean that the safety of passengers and staff cannot be ensured. The affected passengers will be contacted by their airline for a refund or a booking on an alternative flight”.

89 flights were due to depart from Charleroi tomorrow. Around 16,000 passengers will be impacted by the cancellations. Children in Wallonia and in Francophone education in Brussels have school holidays this week and next. Consequently, many of the flights due to depart from Charleroi on Tuesday are fully booked.

Although Tuesday’s departures from the airport have been cancelled arrivals have not. Nevertheless, passengers booked on flights to Charleroi on Tuesday are advised to contact their airline to check that their flight has not been diverted or cancelled.

The airport says that it will do everything it can to ensure that normal service is resumed on Wednesday.
