Teenagers climb scaffolding on Leuven’s Oude Markt, ignoring the orders of the police to come down

Two 18-year-old youths from Antwerp could receive a hefty bill after they climbed up scaffolding erected in front of the University Hall on Leuven’s (Flemish Brabant) Oud Markt. The youths ignored the orders of the police to come down. They even attempted to hide by crawling into a gutter.

The scaffolding has been put up outside the University Hall for renovation work. However, two 18-year-olds from Antwerp decided to use it as a climbing frame on Thursday night. At around 3am they climbed up the scaffolding on the Oude Markt.

As students that were enjoying a night out watched on, the teenagers climbed up to a height of several floors, ignoring the orders of the police to come down.

Police spokesman Mathieu Caudron told VRT News that the Fire Service was called “The fire-fighters went up with a ladder truck. But even then, the youths still refused to come down. They ran away from the fire-fighters and crawled up to the gutter.”

Eventually, the youths did get into the ladder truck. Once safely on the ground, they were taken away by police. They spent a night in the cells at Leuven police station. The police spokesman says that the youths could face a hefty bill. An anti-social behaviour fine of up to 350 euro each might be issued and they may also be required to pay the costs incurred by the fire service for bringing them down.
