N-VA remains the largest party despite a strong challenge from the Flemish socialist party Voortuit.
The leader of Vooruit Conner Rousseau was first candidate on the party’s list and he had made no secret of his ambition to become Mayor. Vooruit almost doubled their percentage of the vote from 13% in 2018 to 26.6% now. Mr Dehandschutter’s N-VA lost some ground and was down from 29% 6 years ago to 27.5% today. The far-right Vlaams Belang is 3rd with 19.5% of the votes, up 2.4% on 2018.
The Christian democrats, the greens and liberals all saw their percentage of the vote fall. The far-left PVDA was up slightly on its score in 2018.
