With all the votes now counted, the incumbent Mayor of the Limburg city of Genk is almost certain that he will be able to stay on for another 6-year-term. Wim Dries’ Christian democrat list gained the support of by far the greatest number of voters in Genk.
43.2% of those that voted in the municipal elections in Genk voted for the Christian democrats. This is 12.9 percentage points more than Flemish Education Minister Zuhal Demir’s nationalists that polled 30.3%. Prior to the election, Ms Demir had said that she would leave the Flemish government if she were able to become Mayor of Genk.
The socialist-green cartel list polled 10.5%, the far-right Vlaams Belang 8.5% (- 0.8) and the far-left PVDA 7% (+2.1).
