“Formateur” Bart De Wever says that November is “the natural deadline” for the formation of a new federal government

In an interview with VRT News the man leading the talks for the formation of a new federal government, the Flemish nationalist leader Bart De Wever has said that next month is the “natural deadline” for the formation of a new coalition. Mr De Wever clarified by saying that a new coalition government would need to be in place next month to enable the 2025 budget to get through parliament in time.

Mr De Wever went on to say that the leaders of the 4 other parties (Flemish socialists, Flemish Christian democrats, Francophone liberals and Francophone centrists) agree that a new government needs to be in place no later than next month.

Bart De Wever confirms that despite the parties being in full campaign mode ahead of Sunday’s local elections the negotiating teams have been working flat out.

"The reading of the texts of the policy documents and redrafting them with all the amendments had been done. All the texts are now ready to go to the central negotiating table. What is still in brackets are the sticking points. If there is a will to form a government, we can work our way through them”.

“Then we move to a very difficult stage in which the budget is drawn up and decisions are made on socio-economic reforms. But that can be worked through just in a few days, because everything has already been prepared. However, whether it will go as quickly as that is another matter. Forming the new government will require a lot of political courage. Because it will not be the bearer of much good news".
