Drivers surprised by escaped donkey on Leuvensesteenweg (VIDEO)

Motorists on the famous Leuvensesteenweg, a major traffic artery linking the Belgian capital with Leuven, got quite a surprise on Tuesday afternoon when a donkey was spotted calmly walking on the road in Sint-Stevens-Woluwe (Zaventem – Flemish Brabant).

‘Fortunately, helpful local residents were able to rescue the animal from the traffic,’ says police chief Eveline Van Outryve.

Drivers have been known to call fellow motorists one, but on Tuesday afternoon a real donkey appeared in traffic on the approach to Brussels.

‘Police officers intervened and led the animal back to its owner,’ explained Van Outryve. ‘A number of helpful neighbours had already taken the donkey out of the traffic. One of them managed to tie up the animal while waiting for the owner to appear.’

The owner had already made himself known to police reporting he had lost his donkey. As a result the animal could quickly be reunited with its owner. Luckily the incident only caused limited traffic disruption on the Leuvensesteenweg.
