Voters go to the poles in the local elections

Today is the 13 October and voters across Belgium are casting their votes in the municipal and provincial elections. While voters in the 5 Flemish provinces are no longer obliged by law to at least turn up at the polling station, voters in the Brussels-Capital Region and Wallonia still risk a fine if they fail to go and vote.

In Flanders and Wallonia voters vote twice, once for the representatives on their local municipal council and once to elect the members of the provincial council. As the Brussels-Capital Region is not part of any province, voters in Brussels only vote once to elect the members of their local municipal council.

The polling stations opened at 8am and remain open until 1pm for those voting using traditional paper ballot slips and at 4pm for those casting their votes using a voting computer.

The first results are expected sometime between 2pm and 3pm.
