More new electric cars registered so far this year than in the whole of 2023

Almost 100,000 new electric cars have been registered in Belgium during the first nine months of this year. That is more than in the whole of 2023, figures from mobility organisation Traxio show. Almost 9 in 10 new electric cars are registered to companies or leasing companies, but the number owned by members of the public is also rising sharply.

The number of new fully-electric cars registered in Belgium rose again sharply this year: 96,233 new electric vehicles were registered during the first 9 months of the year. That is already more than the 93,180 vehicles registered in 2023.

Not surprisingly new electric cars are predominantly registered to companies (31.5 per cent) or via leasing companies (55 per cent). Together these two segments account for almost 9 in 10 of newly registered vehicles. Over 13 per cent were registered by members of the public. That number is double that of last year.

The market for second-hand electric cars is a lot smaller and that shows in the figures. The number of second-hand electric cars registered so far this year stands at just over 16,000.  That is double last year’s figure. The ratio of private individuals to companies is fifty-fifty.

Tax benefits

The sharp rise in the number of new electric cars registered is due to 2 factors. ‘For employers, electric cars are interesting because there are huge tax advantages attached to them,’ Filip Rylant of Traxio explains.

The big increase among private owners is partly due to the Flemish government grant. Flemings have been able to apply for it when they buy a new or second-hand electric car since February. ‘If we look at which are the cars that are purchased most, we notice that these are the cars that just meet the conditions to get the grant,’ Rylant notes.
