Police shot at after car chase through the streets of Anderlercht

A high speed car chase through the streets of the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht ended with shots being fired at the police. The gun used was possibly an automatic weapon like a Kalashnikov. One of the bullets went through their windscreen of a car that was behind the police car. No one was injured in the shooting. The gunmen had fled at high speed after the police had attempted to make them pull over so that their vehicle could be checked.

The incident was the second shooting in Anderlecht on the same evening. At 7:15pm on Wednesday the police were called to shooting near to the Aumale metro station. Shortly afterwards, less than 1km away in the Dantestraat the police attempted to carry out checks on a vehicle. The vehicle was being driven recklessly and those inside it were acting suspiciously. However, the car drove off at speed and the police car followed. Once the car was far enough ahead of the police one of the passengers got out and started shooting. Despite one of the bullets going through the window of a vehicle that was behind the police car no one was injured.

An initial investigation points to the criminals having used an automatic weapon like a Kalashnikov. It is possible that the shooting is linked to the shooting near to the Aumale metro station earlier in the evening.

A ballistics expert, forensics experts from the Federal Judicial Police lab, a pathologist and a officer from the public prosecutor’s office went to the scene. The public prosecutor’s office says that it considers the incident to be “very serious”.
