The Flemish socialist party Vooruit has announced that for the time being at least it won’t be putting forward a candidate for the post of speaker in the Flemish Parliament. Under the agreement made by the three parties that form the new Flemish Government the post of speaker of the Flemish Parliament should go to a socialist.

However, at the weekly meeting of the party’s Executive Committee, it was decided that Vooruit would not be putting forward a candidate for the post until the New Year.
The decision means that for the time being at least, the Flemish nationalist politician Liesbeth Homans will stay on as speaker.
