The man leading the talks on the formation of a new Flemish government, the Flemish nationalist Matthias Diependaele, is presenting a revised version of a draft coalition accord text to the two other parties involved in the talks today (Tuesday).
Is 3rd version of draft accord enough to get Flemish coalition talks back on track?
This is the third draft of the document that if it were accepted by the negotiators from the socialist and the Christian democrat parties would form the basis for what would be the final sprint towards the formation of a new Flemish coalition government.
2 previous versions of Mr Diependaele’s draft agreement text were rejected by the socialists and Christian democrats as they believed that the texts were too one-sided and were too close to the policies listed in the manifesto of Mr Diependaele’s party N-VA.
But will it by 3rd time lucky? Mr Diependaele says that the revised version of the draft accord is “last step” before the resumption of negotiations. He added that this is his final offer. However, it is unclear what would happen if the Christian democrats and/or the socialists reject it. A government that includes the nationalists, socialists and the Christian democrats is the only feasible way a working majority can be obtained in the Flemish Parliament.
Mr Diependaele met with the socialists on Tuesday morning and will meet with the Christian democrats on Tuesday afternoon.
