In Veurne (West Flanders), the emergency services have been able to free a stowaway who had got trapped between the cabin and the cargo hold of a lorry. It’s thought the migrant had hidden in the space in the hope of arriving in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, he got crushed when the truck turned onto a roundabout and the space between the cab and the truck's cargo bay became too small.
The migrant, whose identity is still to be established, sustained serious injuries to his hip and was taken to hospital. The injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
The emergency services were alerted by a passer-by, who heard the migrant’s screams.
Police commissioner Jorik Debruyne of the local police zone ‘We have a suspicion that he tried to climb into the lorry either in the industry zone or in the vicinity of the accident, in order to head towards France and to cross to England.’
