Net Brussel’s street-cleaners return to the Brabant neighbourhood

Workers of the Brussels waste management agency Net Brussel have returned to work in the Brabant neighbourhood, where cleaning rounds will resume under the supervision of local community wardens. The waste management agency is embarking upon a six-month pilot project in the neighbourhood, where cleaning rounds stopped after street-cleaners were attacked.

At the end of June, Net Brussel decided to stop its clean-up rounds in the Brabantstraat, the Aarschotstraat, the Keulenstraat, the Quatrechtstraat, the Rogierstraat, the d'Hoogvorststraat, the Allardstraat, the De Potterstraat and the Liedtsstraat, because staff were regularly attacked there. Net Brussel argued that the municipality of Schaarbeek had to provide extra security.

The municipality and the agency have now agreed to start a six-month pilot project that allows Net Brussel to resume its rounds, accompanied by Schaarbeek's community wardens.

The project will focus on raising local residents’ awareness about cleanliness in the neighbourhood. At the end of the pilot, Net Brussel and Schaarbeek hope to formulate recommendations for sustainable measures to improve the situation in the North District with regard to cleanliness and safety.
