The Belgian flew towards her first gold medal at the Paralympic Games in the final of the 100 metres. She seemed on course for a medal throughout the race, but in the final metres she showed no mercy rushing past everyone.

Bayekula finished ahead of America’s Tatyana McFadden, the bronze went to Finland’s Amanda Kotaja.

Bayekula’s perfectly paced her race and took Belgium’s overall medal tally to nine medals, six of which won yesterday.

Earlier, Bayekula also competed in the 800 metres, where she finished in fifth place in the final. On Thursday, she competes in the 400 metres, an event in which she is the world record holder.

The 29-year-old Bayekula suffers from spina bifida, an incomplete development of the spine.
