In less than 1 week 150 volunteers sign up to help vulnerable East Flemish youngsters with their homework

In less than a week the voluntary organisation Uilenspel has found 150 new volunteers to help vulnerable and disadvantaged children with their education. The volunteers will help children across East Flanders with homework as well as with building up their self-confidence and motivation. Currently more than 400 children are on Uilenspel’s waiting list

The not-for-profit group Uilenspel’s Jasmijn De Smet told VRT News that

“It was one phone call after another. When we launched our appeal last week, we were getting a new volunteer every half hour. We never expected it to go so well”.

In the meantime, 150 new volunteers have signed up. “That means we will be able to offer another 150 1-on-1 help”, Ms De Smet said.

“Today, for example, I have already received 2 calls from parents asking if we will finally be able to help their children this school year as they have been on the waiting list for 3 years now. We hope that with this many new volunteers we will finally be able to get these families off the waiting list.”

Despite the success of the past week, Uilenspel is still on the lookout for new volunteer. Volunteers from the Sint-Niklaas, Zele and Ronse areas will be particularly welcome.
