Belgian-Dutch game store chain Game Mania has filed for bankruptcy. At the end of June, the retail chain sought and received protection from its creditors from the Antwerp enterprise court. However, the search for a buyer was unsuccessful.
Already in June, the management pointed to the digitisation of the video game industry and the highly competitive retail landscape as reasons for the company’s woes. Sharp cost increases due to high inflation caused additional pressure on financial results, though the company hasn’t disclosed any financial details on losses and debts.
Game Mania says it is currently awaiting the court's decision on its bankruptcy application. The online store will remain open for now, but the high-street shops will close from today.
The retail chain specialises in selling gaming products, board games and pop culture merchandise. Game Mania has 30 stores, including 18 in the Netherlands and 12 in Belgium and employs 165 people.
