After a day of one-on-one meetings with the leaders of the 5 parties involved in the federal coalition talks, Belgium’s Head of State King Filip has appointed the Francophone centrist party leader Maxime Prévot as Mediator. It will be Mr Prévot’s task to get the coalition talks back on track. He will report to the King on the progress of his mission on Monday 2 September.
Mr Prévot's appointment comes after the leader of the Flemish nationalist party N-VA Bart De Wever failed to get all 5 parties that are currently involved in the talks to reach an agreement on socio-economic policy.
In a statement released on Friday afternoon the Royal Palace said that Mr Prévot's mission “is to bring the positions of the different parties closer together so that negotiations can resume as soon as possible. Mr Prévot has accepted this assignment and will report to the King on Monday 2 September.”
