Despite a series of new bike boxes installed around the capital by parking.brussels in recent months, the number of people waiting for secure parking continues to grow.

Regional parking agency parking.brussels has installed 72 new bike boxes in Brussels since the start of the year, increasing capacity by 282 spaces. In addition, 212 spaces were created in eight new car parks and 158 through public-private partnerships.

In total, there are currently 5,542 bicycle parking spaces, but demand for a space is growing: from 12,474 people in February to 13,175 today.

Parking.brussels says it is working on creating additional spaces. Its management contract with the Brussels government states the ambition to create 21,250 new secure spaces in the 2022-2026 period.

Of these, 10,000, including bike boxes and shared car parks, will be set up by parking.brussels. The remaining 11,250 will be commissioned by national rail operator NMBS and regional public transport operator MIVB.

Meanwhile, the agency is developing projects such as the “Share your garage with your neighbour” initiative, in which householders can rent an unused, closed space to their neighbours.
