The opening of the Oosterweel Link has been put back by another 3 years. The Oosterweel Link will connect the E34 Knokke to Antwerp highway with the Antwerp Ring Road in the Merksem and Deurne districts of the city.
Further delays to Oosterweel Link contruction project, it won’t open to traffic until 2033
With the new opening date having been put back to 2033 the link will now open some 37 years after it was first proposed as a means to reduce traffic congestion on the Antwerp Ring Road and improve access to the port facilities on the left bank of the River Scheldt.
The news that the opening of the Link has been put back still further was announced by Lantis that is coordinating the project and the construction company TM Roco on Wednesday morning. They say that the three-year delay has come about due issues regarding PFAS pollution and issues regarding permits.
Gert Osselaer of Lantis told VRT News that "We do indeed face a number of delays on the Right Bank. This is due to issues with permits and due to the problems with PFAS. These are issues that were beyond our control and that have led to delays. We now expect that the Link will be able to open at the end of 2023”.
A few months ago, Lantis maintained that the Oosterweel link would be ready to open in 2030. However, this now no longer appears to be the case.
