Brussels teenager that almost drowned in lake at Ghent recreation centre has died in hospital
Last Tuesday evening, the 19-year-old and 2 of his friends swam to the far side of the Blaarmeersen Lake, an area where swimming is not permitted due to dangerous undercurrents. Furthermore, they did so after the lifeguards whose job it is to ensure the safety of swimmers at Blaarmeersen had already finished work for the evening.
The 19-year-old ran into difficulties in the water. A passer-by saw what was happening and was able to get the youth out of the water. The emergency services were contacted and in the meantime, attempts were made to resuscitate the youth. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition where he was kept in an artificial coma.
On Sunday evening the East Flemish prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the young man had died in hospital.
