More than 400 people tagged an emotional vigil for the family who died in a road accident on the E403 at Ruddervoorde (West Flanders) last weekend. The vigil took place in Kortemark (West Flanders) where the family lived. Those taking part in the vigil placed tea light candles in the shape of a heart on the grass and held hands around it as they remembered the couple and their 8-year-old daughter.
400 people take part in moving tribute to family killed in accident caused by drunk driver
Earlier on Thursday the couple's family had set up a shrine at the accident scene with candles flowers and cuddly toys. The idea for a vigil for the family whose lives were so abruptly taken by a drunk driver came from Benny and Pascale from Izegem (West Flanders). Benny told VRT News that his experience as a nurse had taught him that we often don’t think enough about how the relatives feel when something like this happens.
The vigil took place in the De Krekemeerszen nature reserve in Kortemark. Among the 400 people present at the vigil were a lot of families with young children. It was a serene and very moving vigil. Those present formed a large circle and held each other’s hands. Many of those present knew the victims personally.
Amber and Sara worked with the woman that died they told VRT News that “It was very important for us to be here. It was a really nice vigil. They really deserved that. She was a wonderful person who you never heard complaining.”
