A carriage horse stampeded in the centre of the West Flemish city of Bruges on Monday. The unfortunate animal is believed to have become startled after having been stung by a wasp. The coachman was eventually able to calm the horse down and no one was injured in the incident.
The horse had just left Bruges’ central market square when it suddenly began its stampede near to Wollestraat in Bruges City Centre.
The animal raised its rear end and one of its back legs got stuck. The horse then ended up against the facade of a house.
Recovering in a meadow
The coachman was eventually able to calm the animal down with the help of a colleague. Meanwhile, the police kept the public at bay. Coachman Fré Pintelon told VRT News that “The animal was taken home in a horsebox trailer to recover and is now resting in the meadow”.
Mr Pintelon was keen to stress that the incident had nothing to do with the heat. “The horses stay at home as soon temperatures reach 30°C. It was nowhere near as hot as that on Monday.”
