Seascouts cancel camp after hidden camera is discovered in shower room

Seascouts from the seaside resort of Nieuwpoort have ended their summer camp in Beringen(Limburg) early after camp leaders found a hidden camera in the showers. Beringen police are now investigating the incident. It is not yet clear whether any images were taken with the camera.

‘A camera was found in one of the showers,’ says Jan Verbeure of the FOS Open Scouting organisation. ‘The camp leadership immediately called in the police. The investigation is ongoing and we don't have much information yet. We have no idea who placed the camera.’

Camp halted early

‘The camp leadership is obviously very shocked. It's not nice to discover something like that at your camp. The scouts did not feel safe after the discovery and immediately decided to bring the camp to a halt to ensure the integrity and safety of all members.  The day of the discovery everyone left for home - 3 days earlier than planned.’

‘I have been working for FOS Open Scouting for several years now and this is the first time I have experienced anything like this. I hope it will also be the last time. I still have to process it all myself. Going to a camp is mainly about having fun, about play. Something like this is obviously not part of that.’

Meanwhile, the investigation is being conducted by the criminal investigation department of the local Beringen police. ‘We did indeed receive a report last week,’ confirms chief of police Geert Wouters. ‘Our team visited the camp and established that a hidden camera was present in the shower room. That camera was confiscated. In order not to jeopardise the further course of the investigation, we are not going to say any more just now.’
