In the East Flemish town of Sint-Niklaas local police on bikes caught a member of the public, who had absconded with a Porsche car after he failed to return the vehicle to the showroom after a test drive. The arrest was made by two officers from the bike squad.
Last week, a 28-year-old man presented himself at the Premium Car Company dealership in Pelt(Limburg) wanting to do a test drive in a car. He left his identity card and contact details, saying he would return the car the next day with a reimbursement of the kilometres driven.
After he did not return, the dealership made an appeal on social media. A day later, the manager was able to stop the Posche with the help of the police, but the driver, a man in his twenties, succeeded in escaping with the vehicle.
That is until last Friday, when two officers on bikes were able to arrest the suspect. ‘Again the man tried to flee and this time on his motorbike, crashed into our officers ,’ a local police spokesman explained. ‘They were both slightly injured but still managed to restrain him.’
The officers had to be taken to hospital and are unfit for work as a result of the incident. The car, undamaged, was recovered.
The local police wanted charges of attempted manslaughter brought, but the East Flanders public prosecutor's office was unwilling to go that far. The suspect has since been released.
