In 1986 Belgium knocked Argentina out of the World Cup that was held in Mexico. After the game the then national team goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff received a football shirt signed by Diago Maradona. The Argentinian football great wrote “for El Simpatico” on the shirt. Jean-Marie Pfaff gave Maradona one of his goalkeeping gloves in exchange. Now the shirt is up for auction.

Jean-Marie Pfaff’s daughter Kelly told VRT News that "The shirt is usually kept lying in a safe and we often ask ourselves what we should do with it. You can’t really just give it to someone. Dad said that he wants to sell it, but he of course hopes that the person that buys it attaches as much importance to it as he does”.

Kelly Pfaff says that it is not important how much the shirt fetches at auction. "Money is not important. We feel that the things that are really personal to my father are much more important than this. For example, for me his goalkeeping gloves are more important than that shirt”.

Those wishing to place a bid for Maradona’s shirt can do so until 2 August via Sotheby’s website. Bidding starts at 735,000 euro. The shirt is expected to sell for around 1.1 million euro.
