Nine teenagers from Bruges heading back from a summer camp in Spain became ill and had to be hospitalised in France. They have tested positive for the corona virus.
It was not the bus ride home any of them had planned: Nine 17- and 18-year olds who were attending a summer camp hosted by the youth service Kazou got sick on their way home yesterday and had to be hospitalised in Montpellier, France. All of them tested positive for Covid-19.
The rest of the campers will be picked up by Kazou in a separate bus. Kazou is the youth service branch of the CM mutuality.
The youth were at a camp in Playa de Aro in the Costa Brava and were on their way home. “One of the them got sick on the bus, and we took them out of the bus for a bit,” says Florence Slock of Kazou. “We thought it was maybe due to there being no air conditioning, which was broken.”
‘Safe and well’
When eight more of the campers became ill it was apparent that it wasn’t due to the heat. “We called emergency services, which decided to take them to a hospital in Montpellier. They all tested positive for the corona virus.”
All the campers are feeling better but will be kept in hospital for a bit longer. The rest of the group was brought to a school in Montpellier, where they await a bus from Belgium to come and pick them up.
“Of course there was a bit of panic at first,” says Slock. “It’s not such a great end to a fun Kazou holiday. But in the meantime, everyone is well and safe.”
