It's the tenth time that the Flemish government honours people or organisations that "contribute to the development and the positive image of Flanders."

World Health Organisation regional chief Hans Kluge was born in Roeselare (West Flanders) and studied medicine, surgery and obstetrics.

Since 2020, he has been regional director for Europe at the World Health Organisation (WHO). He plays a crucial role in Europe's approach to health crises, working with health ministers to promote the health of European citizens.

Game developer honoured too

Swen Vincke hails from Bruges and has garnered world fame with his video game 'Baldur's Gate 3'. In 2023, the game landed six awards at the Game Awards in Los Angeles - the Oscars of the gaming industry.  Awards included that of 'Best Game of the Year'.

Vincke's company Larian Studios was founded in Ghent in 1994 and today operates seven offices worldwide.

Medals of honour have also been awarded to Barbara Ceuleers for her role in steering the debate in euthanasia in Flanders and Philippe Vandekerckhove, the head of Red Cross Flanders, an organisation that motivates 13,000 volunteers.
