Thieves have made off with dozens of kilos of cannabis, adulterants for cocaine, over a tonne of water pipe tobacco and 269,000 cigarettes from a warehouse at Brussels Airport. The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor's office and the finance ministry have confirmed the news. The theft happened from a warehouse where customs store seized goods.
Large quantities of seized drugs, tobacco and cigarettes stolen at Brussels Airport
Thieves managed to break into a Brucargo building at Zaventem Airport late last week. During the break-in, they made off with a large quantity of drugs, tobacco and cigarettes.
"We are talking about 29 kg of cannabis, 75 kg of levamisole, used to adulterate cocaine, almost 1,400 kg of water pipe tobacco and 269,000 cigarettes," Francis Adyns of the finance ministry told daily Het Laatste Nieuws.
The items were stored in a warehouse where goods seized by customs are kept. The building in question is secured and is only accessible with an airport badge. The justice department is investigating how persons unauthorised managed to gain access.
Extra cameras in the pipeline
Francis Adyns says customs had asked the airport to provide extra security for the hangar. He did not disclose whether there are any signs of forced entry into the building. "We are awaiting the outcome of judicial enquiry" he told reporters.
The perpetrators have not yet been caught.
It is understood that additional surveillance cameras will be installed at the warehouse "in the near future". It is a Brussels Airport building but is used by customs.
A year ago, thieves also managed to break in here and steal goods incuding seized cigarettes.
