A beaver has taken up residence in the middle of a busy motorway intersection at Lummen in Limburg Province. The animal has set up home in a stream that flows under the elevated intersection that links the E314 and E313 motorways. Thousands of cars, lorries and busses drive past it every day, but the beaver doesn't seem to mind.
There are a lot of trees and four drainage ponds for water that drains off the elevated motorway intersection. Water and wood provide the perfect environment for a beaver.
Since the animal’s arrival, several of the trees under the intersection have been chewed and few of them have been felled by the eager beaver. The beaver’s activities have been caught on camera by the nature studies undergraduate Jan Nijs.
The beaver is building itself a den for which it is using wood and other plants. Jan Nijs says that the animal reaches "its" pond via the "Mangelbeek" stream, for which the 4 ponds under the intersection are overflow basins.
