“Grumpy grandpa” Jack Russel to spend the rest of his days at Ghent animal sanctuary after 5 unsuccessful adoption attempts

After 5 unsuccessful adoption attempts the Ghent Animal Sanctury in East Flanders has decided that a 14-year-old Jack Russel dog can spend the rest of his days there. The elderly pooch, whose name is Bertrand’s difficult character has meant that 5 different families that had adopted him returned hm to the sanctuary because of his behaviour.

The Sanctuary’s Kevin Vankeirsbilck told VRT News that the staff at the Sanctuary say the dog is a “grumpy grandpa” and is “happier here than with a family”. It is a first for the Ghent Animal Sanctuary that a dog has been allowed to stay there for the rest of its life.

"The final attempt to adopt out Bertrand proved to us that the sanctuary is the place where he is really at home”.

Two experienced dog trainers were unsuccessful in their attempts to get the elderly Jack Russel to mend its ways.

"They were able to teach him not to do certain things, but he remained unhappy. After a few weeks we took him back. This was the 5th failed adoption attempt. Betrand is a 'grumpy grandpa', but we really like him."

According to the animal shelter, Betrand was very stressed when he was placed with families. His manifested itself with bad behaviour such as barking during the night, urinating indoors and even biting the people that had adopted him.

"Bertrand is a very unique case. An adoption can sometimes take years, not every dog fits into every family. We have seen this often in the past, but now this is an exceptional case."

It is the very first time that an “unadoptable” has been allowed to remain at shelter. "He will be our mascot, our office dog", Kevin Vankeirsbilck told VRT News.
